Whether some sort of external controller would mean you’re eyes are on the road more when using the system is debatable, but we have heard that argument being made. But it’s much quicker to simply reach across than try and scroll via the steering controls. Unlike some competitors which offers control units down by gear levers, as well as capacitive functionality, the InControl Touchscreen Pro system only works via touch, or the steering controls. And anyone who owns an older model Jaguar or Land Rover will tell you just how clumsy the old units were. So, in this brave new world has Jaguar been able to produce a better infotainment and communication system? Well, even without turning the car on you’d have to say, yes. And now, the touchscreen units we have in even the cheapest of cars are able to connect with you phone and while all will stream the music on it, many, depending on the connectivity, will even be able to display the maps and more from your phone, read out text messages and even allow you to dictate a response. And no sooner does one car maker reveal its latest tablet-esque system than another has released its system that’s either bigger or faster.īut it wasn’t so long ago that we never needed our infotainment systems to do much more than change the radio station from either AM to FM, or use a safe-cracker’s touch to finely tune a radio station.Īnd then along came sat-nav units and map book publishers began going broke. Eventually, in 1987, Carli gave him a chance, and he directed the video for Kool Moe Dee’s “Wild Wild West”, which enjoyably merged hip-hop with the visual tropes of Western movies, while staying in line with Kool Moe Dee’s swaggering personality. The director used to visit Carli’s office regularly to talk about movies, music, and his ambitions. Kalvert (who sadly passed away in 2014) would go on to direct many music videos and the Leonardo DiCaprio film The Basketball Diaries, but in 1988 he was still in his early days. No, Carli wanted a director who would get to know DJ Jazzy Jeff and The Fresh Prince and make a video that achieved her goal: “What could we do that could really tell this story within the budget that we had, in a way that personified the group?” Enter Scott Kalvert.ĭirector Scott Kalvert on the set of his 2002 film Deuces Wild “Parents” was a different kind of hip-hop song, and Carli knew she needed a different kind of director to both bring it to life and ensure the pair made a strong first impression.Ĭarli wasn’t a fan of the usual music video-making process: send a song to a production company, who would assign a director to create a treatment – usually, without ever meeting the musicians. Two years before a show about a West Philadelphia kid moving to Bel-Air premiered, Jive Records was looking to shoot a video for the duo’s promising second single “Parents Just Don’t Understand” off their album, He’s the DJ, I’m the Rapper. That ahead-of-its-time inventiveness, along with its playful creative quality and infectious theme music, is what has made it one of the greatest TV openings of all time.īut how then did it come about? Well, we’d like to take a minute, just sit right there, and we’ll tell you all about the main titles for The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air.Īlbum cover for He's the DJ, I'm the Rapper (1988) Sure, it may not resemble the openings of series such as Game of Thrones, Jessica Jones, or Vikings, but it serves the same function: focusing on a show’s tone and spirit, rather than merely its star performers. In this way, it’s not far off from what we see in our current Golden Age of TV main titles. It was a standalone work telling a self-contained backstory that was creatively distinct from the show – right down to Will Smith’s mother in the opening being different than the one in the show. Its opening was an entirely original work full of vibrant colours, intricate graffiti, sped-up cartoonish motion, and a dose of slapstick. The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air was different. Sitcom openings conveyed basic information about the cast and crew, and propped up the theme song. More often than not they’d feature a montage of clips from existing episodes or actors dutifully posing for the camera as their names appeared. In 1990, TV openings – for sitcoms especially – weren’t particularly creative. But 26 years ago when the show premiered, it was looking forward, even anticipating, the evolution of TV main title design. Either way, to watch The Fresh Prince opening is to look back. It might also come from seeing something that’s nearly three decades old that – despite all its dated style, colours, and fashion – has lost none of its charm. That might come from the days you watched the show when it originally aired or in reruns. Two, you’ll feel a warm nostalgia spread through you like hot cocoa. Watch the opening credits for The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, and two things are likely to happen. Ranged is more there for the Critical Chance and a bit of damage. EPA fuel-mileage estimates for the tested powertrain are 17 mpg in city driving, 19 mpg on the highway, and 18 combined. The manual gearbox was a little notchy through the gates but geared to help maintain a steady stream of power, and the fairly light clutch was easy to modulate for comfortable driving. Wending through city and suburban street and expressway traffic, we found the 2.3, with its 310 lb-ft of torque, to be pleasantly eager. The autobox is standard in the rest-including the base 4-door-and required with the V6. The 7-speed stickshift-with six conventional gears plus an extra-low “crawler” cog-is standard in base (2-door only), Big Bend, Black Diamond, and Badlands models, with a 10-speed automatic available. That’s a little shorter than the wheelbase of a 4-door Wrangler Unlimited, though the Bronco is one inch longer overall at 189.4 inches.Įngine choices are much narrower with the Bronco, just the 270-horsepower turbocharged 2.3-liter four standard in most models and a 310-horse turbo 2.7-liter V6 standard in the Wildtrak and limited-run First Edition but optional for all others. The 4-door version has a 116.1-inch wheelbase 15.7 inches longer than the span under its 2-door companion. Like Wrangler, the Bronco is a body-on-frame sport-ute. The front seat backs are outfitted with a MOLLE strap system for carrying carabiner-equipped accessories and other outdoor-adventuring gear. With delivery, a 4-door Black Diamond started at $40,040 in 2021, but the test truck was optioned to $42,355. Linux, however, assumes that this invisible character isn’t needed. The last cause for real confusion in practice is the byte-order mark (BOM) that Windows requires to accept a file as UTF-8 encoded. It, therefore, just seems to be a matter of time until UTF-16 disappears. After decades of resistance, Microsoft is offering Linux on Azure servers and is beginning to integrate Linux into Windows itself. The majority of servers run directly on Linux. Linux-based operating systems are gaining ground, which default to UTF-8. The battle between versions of the Unicode standard seems to be decided: 95% of all web pages (up to 100% for some languages) use UTF-8. Today, Unicode is literally everywhere: As of Unicode 13.0, even emoji characters are included as a set of characters. When Unicode code points are added, user machines need updated fonts to display them. Therefore, those languages require more storage space with characters needing 4, 5, or even 6 bytes each. Many Indian languages were added later to the Unicode character maps and thus occupy “higher” positions in the character map. Storage and transmission efficiency explains the popularity of UTF-8 for the web: Languages with Latin Script still dominate, and HTML codes draw from the same character set-and since UTF-8 is fully compatible with ASCII, most web content requires only single-byte encoding. The first byte is used for ASCII (English), the second mainly for other European languages as well as Arabic and Hebrew, and the third covers most Chinese, Japanese and Korean characters. This is a variable-byte encoding, and the location of characters from different languages reflects the history delineated above. However, Unix-based operating systems (Linux) and the web converged on UTF-8. As one of the 16-bit codes, it covers all 1.1 million code points required by the Unicode standard. Microsoft Windows, the Java programming language, and JavaScript settled on UTF-16, a double-byte encoding system. While people agreed that a universal character set like Unicode was clearly needed, different methods of implementation proliferated. Unicode is the standard with which software needs to comply. While the ISO standard merely consists of a character map, the Unicode Standard Annexes also offer guidance on a number of linguistic issues pertaining to the internationalization of software, such as line-breaking, text segmentation, and handling of right-to-left scripts like Arabic or Hebrew. Within a few years, however, they agreed to a truce and harmonized their standards, so that ISO IEC 10646 and Unicode match in their core specifications and define identical character sets. Universal character encoding schemeīy the late 1980s, it had become clear that constantly dealing with different versions of extended ASCII was impractical, and people proposed “Unicode”-a limitless encoding system that would provide codes for the characters of all the world’s languages without the need for code conversions.Ģ organizations established competing standards-the International Standards Organization as well as the US-based Unicode Consortium. To decode such text, people always had to know exactly what code charts were being used or ended up with garbled text. “Extended ASCII” versions use this available 8th bit and sometimes additional bytes to provide character codings for a range of other languages. Known as ASCII, it requires 7 bits, so it doesn’t fully use the 8 bits of the smallest storage unit (“byte”) on computers. This early transmission format encodes 128 characters-the basic Latin characters used in English, as well as numbers, and punctuation. This binary code-information “bits” consisted of either long or short signals-laid the foundation for information encoding in computers, where bits are also represented in binary format as 0 or 1. In the mid-18-hundreds, American Morse code became a standard method for efficiently transmitting messages over the electrical telegraph. It is hard to believe that Hollow Knight: Silksong was announced over three years ago, and that the original is five years old. Team Cherry's official website does explicitly state to keep the fact that they are only three people in mind, so it is easy to see how work on the seemingly massive Silksong can spread the team thin and direct focus solely into the game's development. Rumors and fake leaks have been spread, but as of now, none have come to fruition. The game did have a great playable demo at the E3 gaming convention in 2019, to give at least some players a taste of the game, but there really has not been much news since.Īs a result, die-hard fans of the game have analyzed any potential date that information could have been revealed, including the series' recent 5th anniversary. Well, Hollow Knight: Silksong was revealed over three years ago, and the game is still a mystery. Any follow up to the critically acclaimed Hollow Knight clearly has some big shoes to fill, but this initial trailer for Silksong assures fans that the game will do just that. The gameplay also is much faster and acrobatic now, all fitting of Hollow Knight: Silksong's protagonist Hornet. This trailer boasts many new enemies, bosses, varied locations with vibrant visuals, new towns - it is clear that the world of Silksong is much larger in scope than the original game. Hollow Knight: Silksong was first revealed on Valentine's Day of 2019, with a surprise announcement trailer. One final DLC was planned, in which players can replay the game as the fan favorite character, Hornet, but this idea fully transitioned into Hollow Knight: Silksong. These include new areas to explore, filled with platforming challenges, on top of some of the hardest boss fights and gauntlets in the game. Due to the success of the base game, Hollow Knight has multiple free DLC expansions. The combat is also difficult, which, in conjunction with losing all obtained currency upon death, frequently draws comparisons to games like Dark Souls.Īll of these factors resulted in Hollow Knight being a smash hit - it is hard to believe that its developer, Team Cherry, consists of only three people. On top of this, Hollow Knight has a deep combat system in which players can use melee and magic, and even customize their loadouts by equipping certain charms. Its world is dense and filled with secrets to uncover, and the game's excellent platforming tools make backtracking fun, as opposed to a chore. Hollow Knight is a metroidvania set in a dark, gloomy underground, with an adorable art style. |
